ELANA PARENT: The race to replace Jason Carter | News Feature | Creative Loafing Atlanta

The race to replace Jason Carter | News Feature | Creative Loafing Atlanta: Last November, Georgia Democrats rejoiced when state Sen. Jason Carter, D-Decatur, launched his 2014 gubernatorial campaign. Most political conversations have since revolved around whether or not the Candler Park resident can unseat Gov. Nathan Deal. But win or lose, Carter's political gamble means the Democratic-leaning district he's represented for the past four years is now up for grabs.

In the weeks after Carter's announcement, Democratic candidates Elena Parent and Kyle Williams decided to run for the lawmaker's DeKalb seat that spans from Buford Highway to the north, Candler Park to the west, East Lake to the south, and Decatur to the east. The two political hopefuls are now mired in one of the state's closest races.

On May 20, voters will decide which Democrat will be on the November ticket against Republican mortgage banker Greg Williams. And considering nearly three-quarters of the DeKalb County district's voters cast Democratic ballots in 2012, the odds are that whoever wins the primary will ultimately replace Carter.

Gay candidate Kyle Williams in heated race with Elena Parent for Ga. senate seat

The race to replace state Sen. Jason Carter for the District 42 seat has become a bit of a bumpy one in recent weeks. The two Democratic candidates, Kyle Williams, an attorney from Decatur who also chairs the Decatur Education Foundation, and Elena Parent, executive director of Georgia Watch and a former state representative (2010-2012), are in a battle to paint themselves as more progressive than the other.

The first openly gay person elected to the state legislature, state Rep. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates), has endorsed Parent over Williams while Williams has picked up endorsements from gay groups Georgia Equality and the national Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund.

A recent story in the conservative blog Peach Pundit outlined how the race has taken a somewhat nasty turn, with the Parent campaign in a push poll telling voters Williams accepted money from an organization that supports such U.S. Senators as Republican John McCain. In reality, in 2009 the Georgia Log Cabin Republicans endorsed Williams in his non-partisan and unsuccessful bid for the Decatur City Commission. Williams also received the endorsement of the Stonewall Democrats.

On the other hand, Williams’ campaign accused Parent of attending a Tea Party conference while she was a state representative. Her explanation was that she was there to “spy” on the organization on behalf of the AFL-CIO and other Democrats, including state Sen. Nan Orrock.

Being honest,
I was completely clueless about the election to replace Jason Carter in the Georgia Senate, about Elena Parent,  and even about her gay opponent Kyle Williams;  until after having had the opportunity meeting Elena in person this pass Sunday afternoon at a neighborhood picnic held by the Mason Mill Civic Association.  She had been invited by MMCA's President Mary Hinkel to speak about the re-zoning/cityhood issue our neighborhood is currently facing; an issue I personally could not care less about.

State Senator Elena Parent was elected to the State Sen-ate in 2014. She represents District 42, which includes por-tions of central and north DeKalb County.

Sen. Parent is member of the Government Oversight, Judi-ciary Non-Civil, Science and Technology, and Special Judici-ary committees.

Senator Parent previously served as the State Representa-tive for District 81 in DeKalb County in 2011 and 2012. Senator Parent then continued her public service as the Executive Director of Georgia Watch, the state’s leading consumer rights non-profit.

Senator Parent began her career as a litigation attorney at Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP. She is active in her com-munity and has served on the Board of Directors of the At-lanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer and the Foundation Board of the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers. She is a proud graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Virginia School of Law.

Recently, Senator Parent was listed in the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s “Who's Who Sustainability” feature for her lead-ership on energy and environmental policy issues. In 2011, she was the recipient of two prestigious awards in recogni-tion of her legislative accomplishments: the Fulton County Daily Report’s “On the Rise” and the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s “40 Under 40”. She was also named a member of the Leadership Atlanta Class of 2013.

Senator Parent traces her core beliefs – the importance of family and making the community a better place for all - to her upbringing in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol where her parents stressed the importance of faith and public service.

Senator Parent is married to Briley Brisendine and they be-came proud parents with the birth of their son, Brooks, in February 2010. Their second son, Reid, was born in Decem-ber 2012. They are members of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Atlanta.

Although we spoke only briefly, after me having introduced myself to her as "THAT" mentally disturbed person living in the house with all the signs and inflatable in the front yard, could not help but be impressed with our new
State Senator Elena Parent.

Had to learn more about her.

Now I can't help but wonder for whom I would have voted?

Maybe I already have..?

After voting for Jason Carter,
all I needed to see the rest of the way down the ballot before casting my vote:
DEMOCRAT.

If I know nothing about the candidates, that's automatically my default vote.

Then again, I only voted for Jason Carter because I knew his grandfather was Democrat; not because I knew anything about Jason Carter.

Would never vote for a Republican; not even a Log Cabin Republican.  But Kyle Williams having been endorsed by our Log Cabin Republicans can be an important clue.

But it relative to the other candidates.

TRULY BLUE BLEEDING HEART LIBERAL

Truly Blue Bleeding Heart Liberal

Introduction

Progressive who's learning what works and what doesn't work by being confrontational.

And I'm beginning to find it somewhat amusing how even the Liberals and Progressives accuse me of being confrontational sounding the same as when Conservatives say,

"PROGRESSIVES!" or "YOU'RE A LIBERAL?!"

Confront?  Confrontational?  Confront?  Confrontational.

That's not a dirty word either, and I take pride in this.

As all progress is a negotiation, how can there be any progress without someone first forcing the negotiations?

But in America this day and age,  the real problem isn't that there is no negotiation (our  politician being the bad people), but with the people who elects them.

There is no attempt for genuinely honest/fair/reasonable discussions among them, first,  when it comes to solving the worlds problems.  How the fuck would the public know who the right persons are sending to Washington?

The same as medical doctors are required so many hours Continuing Education Credits yearly in order to keep practicing medicine, Continuing Education Credits should be required in order to vote.

With today's digital age and every one's OCD preoccupations with their little gadgets/toys,  all one needs to do is ties access to infomercials/CE credits to these phones along with cellphone ownership being considered a privilege, not a right.

You abuse it...

You lose it.

Bragging rights

Still alive somehow when apparently ...

"BIGGEST ASSHOLE THERE EVER WAS?"

If leaning that far left,
then what the fuck am I...?

Had one guy tell me,
"So you're a Socialist."

"No, not really,"
I answered back to him.
"I'm actually for...
a form of capitalism known
as
'bottoms up capitalism' as opposed to 'trickle down economics'.  Jobs...NEED...to be available for those genuinely wanting to work."

My own mother,
in the beginnings of conundrum found myself four years ago and still ongoing,
said to me,
"Get a job at McDonald's."

"No,"
came my answer without needing giving it a seconds thought.
"This would be taking away an entry level job from some young person just needing a lucky break or an older person desperately needing that job .  Not about to do this just to extend the life of one becoming hopeless."

This is not even getting into how my hearing impairment would have most likely disqualified me for a job at McDonald's if already having met a quota keeping up public appearances.  Hell. I don't even know how to operate a cash register.

My own mother still not able empathizing with her own son.

Believe this is roughly when I stopped paying the premiums on my health insurance.

"I'll pay for it,"
my mother quickly reacted upon hearing my plans discontinuing health insurance.

"No mother.
STILL...you are...NOT...getting my point."

This was not the reaction trying to provoke from my mother.  Instead, ended up with me following through with it. We have not said another word about it since.

Although still an avid Obama supporter;
now a criminal in violation of Obama Care.

I believe some of this, also, is aimed at my distant cousin Mike Avery Ross, now running for governor of Arkansas; poster child for Democratic opposition to Obama Care as well as having voted against the Matthew Shepard James Byrd Hate Crime Act.

"WE DON'T NEED UNIVERSAL
HEALTH CARE! THEY GET IT FOR FREE!"
~(Dr. Johnson/Beaver Crossing A.H.)~

"Why have insurance then?
LOSE IT!!!"
~(James E. Avery, Herd Health Medicine)~

This exchange happened between me and another doctor one day filling in as a relief veterinarian for one of his three associates.

Startled him alright.

Not the first time left him speechless, either.

But he always got over it.

"Thank him for us; would you."
~(Dr. Johnson)~

Had just pointed out that, U.S. Representative 4th District of Arkansas making the news during legislation for "Obama Care", Blue Dog Democrat Mike Avery Ross...
was my cousin.

"Are you aware that our deceased frugal Republican father charged just as much delivering...BLACK...babies as he did a white baby.  Yet... it was his party's politics holding them back from their fair chance at a slice of the American pie?"
~(Simply Jim:  Mature Methodist Crackhead)~

"Yes Jim Ed.  I'm aware of this.  BUT...he sent them...ONE FINAL BILL.  And they...STILL...didn't finish paying him back."

Dear Josh,

In our brief discussion after service this past Sunday, you mentioned something about... Carter... when I was trying to explain my relations to Distant Cousin Mike "Avery" Ross; BLUE DOG DEMOCRAT POSTER CHILD FOR DEMOCRATIC OPPOSITION TO OBAMACARE NOW RUNNING FOR GOVERNOR OF ARKANSAS. Could I get you to expand on this please? Currently I'm thinking you are talking about Jason Carter...?

In 2014, Carter voted for House Bill (H.B.) 60, the Safe Carry Protection Act which opponents nicknamed the "guns everywhere" bill. The Safe Carry Protection Act takes effect on July 1, 2014, and permits licensed gun owners to carry guns into many public and private places. The law is supported by the Georgia Baptist Convention which includes 3,600 Baptist churches in Georgia in favor of increased church autonomy, but is not supported by Catholic or Episcopalian church leaders.

Going to send you links to all three of my blogs. The first one was just an experiment seeing what I was capable of producing. Had not done anything like this since Pre-Vet. at University of Arkansas.
Having impressed myself, even if no one else, began the second blog in an attempt at being more brief and visual. That didn't work at too well either. Even more mixed media collage than the first one.

"Rev. Owen. There is nothing any more special about Tim Tebow's mother than mine. The only difference being, his mother getting...EXACTLY... what she wanted! I can't take her "learned helplessness" anymore. Each birthday she has is "ONE, TWO, or THREE" taken away from me."
~(Simply Jim: One Pearl, Total Pig, Anti-Christ)~

I am no longer willing any contact with my mother which has effectively cut me off from the rest of my family.
Have always said, "my family was...SOOOO....dysfunctional, the only reason it appeared functional was because none of us had the same dysfunction."

"Donna. Are you aware...JUST HOW MUCH MORE...JOY BEHAR...has...DONE... for...YOUR LITTLE BABY BROTHER...than...ALL YOUR CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES PUT TOGETHER?"

"OH I HATE HER! HELL! I DON'T KNOW! I DON'T EVEN VOTE! WELL ...FINE THEN! JUST WON'T... SEND ...YOU ANY MORE COOKIES! That...."D"...in...MATH! WHO CARES WHAT "Y" EQUALS!"

To this day, my big sister the first born, still loses the Civil War...EVERY TIME...before the movie is even over.

"Donna. You really do need to stop cheering for the Confederate Army every time you watch a Civil War era movie. Especially considering, all you do is play tennis with your rich lady Republican friends."
"BUT THAT"S JUST THE WAY IT...WAS...BACK THEN!"

The third one, not sure why I started this one; unless, for the first time, finding Tebow kinda cute reading Dr. Seuss 's Story of GREEN EGGS AND HAM. I hope he doesn't sound like this every time he reads.
That book may even still be in my bedroom, hometown of Prescott, Arkansas.

I'll settle for information about ...CARTER?

Sincerely,

THE STORY OF OUR MIRACLE BABY TEBOW AND THAT OF REV. DR. BETH FROM ST. JOSEPH TO ST. MARK:

Beth LaRocca-Pitts has been a member of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church since 1983, though she has been preaching for longer than that! She was raised in Athens Georgia and began faith as a Roman Catholic. “When I was 12 year old and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, I realized that I would never be happy in life if I had to do another job other than the job that the priest at St. Joseph’s did.” Understanding that as a call to ministry, she joined Athens First UMC and at 14 and trained to become a lay speaker at 17.  At Harvard she met her husband Mark. While in Durham, Mark and Beth were blessed by the birth of their twins Ellie and Joe. The whole family is blessed to be in ministry at Saint Mark.

TOO BAD THEY AIN'T CATHOLIC! HE WOULD HAVE MADE A GREAT PRIEST!

Hail Mary pass is a very long forward pass in American football, made in desperation with only a small chance of success, especially at or near the end of a half. The term became widespread after a December 28, 1975 NFL playoff game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Minnesota Vikings, when Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach (a Roman Catholic) said about his game-winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Drew Pearson, "I closed my eyes and said a Hail Mary." Previous to this play, a last-second desperation pass had been called several names, most notably the "Alley-Oop".
The expression goes back at least to the 1930s, being used publicly in that decade by two former members of Notre Dame's Four HorsemenElmer Layden and Jim Crowley. Originally meaning any sort of desperation play, a "Hail Mary" gradually came to denote a long, low-probability pass attempted at the end of a half when a team is too far from the end zone to execute a more conventional play. For more than forty years use of the term was largely confined to Notre Dame and other Catholic universities.

The campaign for the neologism "santorum" started with a contest held in May 2003 by Dan Savage, a columnist and LGBT rights activist. Savage asked his readers to create a definition for the word "santorum" in response to then-U.S. Senator Rick Santorum's views on homosexuality, and comments about same sex marriage. In his comments, Santorum had stated that "In every society, the definition of marriage has not ever to my knowledge included homosexuality. That's not to pick on homosexuality. It's not, you know, man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be." Savage announced the winning entry, which defined "santorum" as "the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex". He created a web site,spreadingsantorum.com (and santorum.com), to promote the definition, which became a top internet search result displacing the Senator's official website on many search engines, including GoogleYahoo! Search, and Bing.
In 2010 Savage said he would take the site down if Santorum donated US$5 million plus interest to Freedom to Marry, a group advocating legal recognition of same-sex marriages.[5] In September 2011 Santorum asked Google to remove the definition from its search engine index. Google refused, responding that the company does not remove content from search results except in very limited circumstances.

UNLESS ALREADY BUSY BEING HAIL MARY SANTORUM?
