Jonas Salk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jonas Salk's 100th Birthday:

Google doodle celebrates the anniversary of scientist who developed polio vaccine

Jonas Salk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Jonas Edward Salk (/sɔːlk/; October 28, 1914 – June 23, 1995) was an American medical researcher and virologist. He discovered and developed the first successful inactivated polio vaccine. He was born in New York City to Jewish parents. Although they had little formal education, his parents were determined to see their children succeed. While attending New York University School of Medicine, Salk stood out from his peers, not just because of his academic prowess, but because he went into medical research instead of becoming a practicing physician.

Until 1957, when the Salk vaccine was introduced, polio was considered the most frightening public health problem of the post-war United States. Annual epidemics were increasingly devastating. The 1952 epidemic was the worst outbreak in the nation's history. Of nearly 58,000 cases reported that year, 3,145 people died and 21,269 were left with mild to disabling paralysis, with most of its victims being children. The "public reaction was to a plague," said historian Bill O'Neal. "Citizens of urban areas were to be terrified every summer when this frightful visitor returned." According to a 2009 PBS documentary, "Apart from the atomic bomb, America's greatest fear was polio." As a result, scientists were in a frantic race to find a way to prevent or cure the disease. U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt was the world's most recognized victim of the disease and founded the organization, the March of Dimes Foundation, that would fund the development of a vaccine.

In 1947, Salk accepted an appointment to the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In 1948, he undertook a project funded by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to determine the number of different types of polio virus. Salk saw an opportunity to extend this project towards developing a vaccine against polio, and, together with the skilled research team he assembled, devoted himself to this work for the next seven years. The field trial set up to test the Salk vaccine was, according to O'Neill, "the most elaborate program of its kind in history, involving 20,000 physicians and public health officers, 64,000 school personnel, and 220,000 volunteers." Over 1,800,000 school children took part in the trial. When news of the vaccine's success was made public on April 12, 1955, Salk was hailed as a "miracle worker" and the day almost became a national holiday. His sole focus had been to develop a safe and effective vaccine as rapidly as possible, with no interest in personal profit. When asked who owned the patent to it, Salk said "There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?" The vaccine is calculated to be worth $7 billion had it been patented.

In 1960, he founded the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, which is today a center for medical and scientific research. He continued to conduct research and publish books, including Man Unfolding (1972), The Survival of the Wisest (1973), World Population and Human Values: A New Reality (1981), and Anatomy of Reality: Merging of Intuition and Reason (1983). Salk's last years were spent searching for a vaccine against HIV. His personal papers are stored at the University of California, San Diego Library.

In 1966, The New York Times referred to him as the "Father of Biophilosophy." According to Times journalist and author Howard Taubman, "he never forgets... there is a vast amount of darkness for man to penetrate. As a biologist, he believes that his science is on the frontier of tremendous new discoveries; and as a philosopher, he is convinced that humanists and artists have joined the scientists to achieve an understanding of man in all his physical, mental and spiritual complexity. Such interchanges might lead, he would hope, to a new and important school of thinkers he would designate as biophilosophers."

Salk describes his "biophilosophy" as the application of a "biological, evolutionary point of view to philosophical, cultural, social and psychological problems." He went into more detail in two of his books, Man's Unfolding, and The Survival of the Wisest. In an interview in 1980, he described his thoughts on the subject, including his feeling that a sharp rise and an expected leveling off in the human population would take place and eventually bring a change in human attitudes:
"I think of biological knowledge as providing useful analogies for understanding human nature.... People think of biology in terms of such practical matters as drugs, but its contribution to knowledge about living systems and ourselves will in the future be equally important.... In the past epoch, man was concerned with death, high mortality; his attitudes were antideath, antidisease", he says. "In the future, his attitudes will be expressed in terms of prolife and prohealth. The past was dominated by death control; in the future, birth control will be more important. These changes we're observing are part of a natural order and to be expected from our capacity to adapt. It's much more important to cooperate and collaborate. We are the co-authors with nature of our destiny."
His definition of a "bio-philosopher" is "Someone who draws upon the scriptures of nature, recognizing that we are the product of the process of evolution, and understands that we have become the process itself, through the emergence and evolution of our consciousness, our awareness, our capacity to imagine and anticipate the future, and to choose from among alternatives."

Mike Ross Talks About His Mother's History With Polio

I remember Mike Ross's mother at the Avery Reunions held annually at Prescott Community Center.  The leg brace and walking with the help of a cane.

Did not know that his father is now a Methodist Minister living in Florida.

Hey Mike,

Another odd bit of synchronicity.

Made me think of your mother with her leg brace and cane at the Avery Reunions.

I first learned of the word "synchronicity" from the Police Album of the same name; but not until after first researching Carl Jung and the "collective unconsciousness."

Just thought I would share this with you.

Sincerely,

James,

I'm not sure if one of Arkansas' candidates for governor will be able to help or hear you, but my offer to meet in the Village for coffee still stands. Let me know if that would suit you.

I'm trying to use your story getting attention to my story which is really our story.

Is it fair for ones problem to be considered a psychosis if the triggers for his supposedly bipolar-ism is the confirmation/congeniality/survivors bias of others?

By no means am I saying I'm free of them. But more than willing listening to anyone caring enough telling me more than:

"Why am I such an ASSHOLE!?"

or

"Go get help for my crystal meths addiction!"

or

"Go get help for a mental disability."

Well, anything I could possibly tell a psychiatrist is already uploaded to the Internet dispersed over three blogs:

http://www.anattemptathumility.blogspot.com/

http://www.twistedpurplecow.blogspot.com/

http://www.minusfleshequalswaterandspirits.blogspot.com/

Shop them around and have some send me their professional opinions. Will be more than willing to consider whatever they have to say; then we go from there.

The bulk of them, also, written under the influence of crystal meths.

Do not get me wrong. No one wants off this crystal meths more than I do. I tire out quickly, get short of breath when exerting myself physically in any way, my feet swell up, but worse....how dismissive everyone else is of anything, I have to say , when trying to explain what it is I'm needing help with first before the addiction can be dealt with effectively.

And this is where the Methodist Church come into play:

Mike AVERY Ross... did my mother fail me...continuing taking me to First United Methodist Church of Prescott, Arkansas... after my father ...stopped going?"

I'm calling you on the "Christian values" we were both raised, only few miles apart.

And I can not help but notice an odd parallel between three sets of Methodist sons:

Mine, James E. Avery, D.V.M; the youngest of three born to Dr. Charles Denson Avery, M.D. and his wife Betty Jo Wolfe, R.N. turn full time housewife...health service.

You, Mike Avery Ross, Blue Dog Democrat politician; only child born to two teachers...public service.

And George Robert Gary, Jr. MDiv; first born son to George Robert Gary, Sr. MDiv ThD and his wife Janet Claire Segers Gary...Ministry.

And the synchronicity doesn't end here; there's lots more...for example-U.S. Representative for Texas's 10th congressional district Micheal McCaul the richest congressman.

Anyway, drop me a line. Want to hear your thoughts.

Even pick up the phone and give me a call.

(404) 788-9263

I need a sponsor. And I need it being someone someone associated with the church. It is them needing hearing the details of how my addiction came to be; how they contributed to the addiction.

I'm still radical atheist; but this is not the same as saying, "not a follower of Jesus." We've just got a pragmatic competence problem only.

I'm certain of this.

An refuse being another trophy for them; confirmation bias only.

Sincerely,

James E. Avery, D.V.M.

TRULY BLUE BLEEDING HEART LIBERAL

Truly Blue Bleeding Heart Liberal

Introduction

Progressive who's learning what works and what doesn't work by being confrontational.

And I'm beginning to find it somewhat amusing how even the Liberals and Progressives accuse me of being confrontational sounding the same as when Conservatives say,

"PROGRESSIVES!" or "YOU'RE A LIBERAL?!"

Confront?  Confrontational?  Confront?  Confrontational.

That's not a dirty word either, and I take pride in this.

As all progress is a negotiation, how can there be any progress without someone first forcing the negotiations?

But in America this day and age,  the real problem isn't that there is no negotiation (our  politician being the bad people), but with the people who elects them.

There is no attempt for genuinely honest/fair/reasonable discussions among them, first,  when it comes to solving the worlds problems.  How the fuck would the public know who the right persons are sending to Washington?

The same as medical doctors are required so many hours Continuing Education Credits yearly in order to keep practicing medicine, Continuing Education Credits should be required in order to vote.

With today's digital age and every one's OCD preoccupations with their little gadgets/toys,  all one needs to do is ties access to infomercials/CE credits to these phones along with cellphone ownership being considered a privilege, not a right.

You abuse it...

You lose it.

Bragging rights

Still alive somehow when apparently ...

"BIGGEST ASSHOLE THERE EVER WAS?"

If leaning that far left,
then what the fuck am I...?

Had one guy tell me,
"So you're a Socialist."

"No, not really,"
I answered back to him.
"I'm actually for...
a form of capitalism known
as
'bottoms up capitalism' as opposed to 'trickle down economics'.  Jobs...NEED...to be available for those genuinely wanting to work."

My own mother,
in the beginnings of conundrum found myself four years ago and still ongoing,
said to me,
"Get a job at McDonald's."

"No,"
came my answer without needing giving it a seconds thought.
"This would be taking away an entry level job from some young person just needing a lucky break or an older person desperately needing that job .  Not about to do this just to extend the life of one becoming hopeless."

This is not even getting into how my hearing impairment would have most likely disqualified me for a job at McDonald's if already having met a quota keeping up public appearances.  Hell. I don't even know how to operate a cash register.

My own mother still not able empathizing with her own son.

Believe this is roughly when I stopped paying the premiums on my health insurance.

"I'll pay for it,"
my mother quickly reacted upon hearing my plans discontinuing health insurance.

"No mother.
STILL...you are...NOT...getting my point."

This was not the reaction trying to provoke from my mother.  Instead, ended up with me following through with it. We have not said another word about it since.

Although still an avid Obama supporter;
now a criminal in violation of Obama Care.

I believe some of this, also, is aimed at my distant cousin Mike Avery Ross, now running for governor of Arkansas; poster child for Democratic opposition to Obama Care as well as having voted against the Matthew Shepard James Byrd Hate Crime Act.

"WE DON'T NEED UNIVERSAL
HEALTH CARE! THEY GET IT FOR FREE!"
~(Dr. Johnson/Beaver Crossing A.H.)~

"Why have insurance then?
LOSE IT!!!"
~(James E. Avery, Herd Health Medicine)~

This exchange happened between me and another doctor one day filling in as a relief veterinarian for one of his three associates.

Startled him alright.

Not the first time left him speechless, either.

But he always got over it.

"Thank him for us; would you."
~(Dr. Johnson)~

Had just pointed out that, U.S. Representative 4th District of Arkansas making the news during legislation for "Obama Care", Blue Dog Democrat Mike Avery Ross...
was my cousin.

"Are you aware that our deceased frugal Republican father charged just as much delivering...BLACK...babies as he did a white baby.  Yet... it was his party's politics holding them back from their fair chance at a slice of the American pie?"
~(Simply Jim:  Mature Methodist Crackhead)~

"Yes Jim Ed.  I'm aware of this.  BUT...he sent them...ONE FINAL BILL.  And they...STILL...didn't finish paying him back."

PROJECT CRICKETT: Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: A large quantity of unused ammunition was recovered inside the school along with three semi-automatic firearms found with Lanza: a .223-caliber Bushmaster XM15-E2S rifle, a 10mm Glock 20SF handgun, and a 9mm SIG Sauer P226 handgun. Outside the school, an Izhmash Saiga-12 shotgun was found in the car Lanza had driven.

Shortly after the shooting, police announced that Lanza used the rifle to kill the victims at the school. At a press conference on December 15, Dr. H. Wayne Carver II, the Chief Medical Examiner of Connecticut, was asked about the wounds, and replied "All the ones that I know of at this point were caused by the long weapon." When asked if the children suffered before dying, Carver replied by stating that "If so, not for very long". Under Connecticut law at the time, the 20-year-old Lanza was old enough to carry a long gun, such as a rifle or shotgun, but too young to own or carry handguns.

On March 28, 2013, court documents released from the investigation showed that the school shooting had occurred in the space of less than five minutes with 156 shots fired. This comprised 154 shots from the rifle and two shots from the 10mm pistol. Lanza fired one shot from the Glock in the hallway and killed himself with another shot from the pistol to the head.
