MIKE ROSS: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE--20 YEARS LATER

Mike Ross
james,

Just two decades ago to the day, Congress passed a crucial and long overdue piece of legislation that has saved millions of lives across the country: The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

I was proud to vote to reauthorize VAWA in Congress, and I fought off attempts by some to weaken the law. But while protections have grown stronger over the years throughout the country, we still have a great deal of work to do at the state level -- particularly here in Arkansas. Our state has frequently been ranked as one of the 10 worst states in the nation when it comes to men killing women, a typical indicator of domestic homicide.

It's not enough to celebrate the fact that Congress took action twenty years ago. Just this week, we saw the reminders of what domestic abuse continues to look like on the national news. Now it's time for Arkansas to take action and enact strong laws to stop domestic violence here in our own backyard.

That's exactly what I plan to do as governor -- but I want to know that you're standing with me.

Do you think it's time for Arkansas to take strong action to stop domestic violence? Click here to let me know you agree.

For far too long, domestic violence was considered a private matter -- something families should deal with on their own, even if this meant condemning millions of women, children, and men to unbearable, unending abuse. Even if they escaped from their abusive partners, survivors often found that they didn't have the support they needed in their communities to feed their families and rebuild their lives, and were forced to return to their abusers.

VAWA helped change that. But that's not enough -- not when there are still 24 people per minute who are victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States, adding up to more than 12 million women and men over the course of a year.

I've made tackling domestic violence the cornerstone of my "Tougher, Smarter Crime Reduction Plan for Arkansas" -- a plan I developed in consultation with law enforcement, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, policymakers, and victim advocates who see first-hand the consequences of allowing this violence to continue.

To put this plan into action, though, I need your support.

Stand with me and declare your support for stronger laws, better training for officials, and more funding for support programs and shelters. Click here to let me know I have your support.

As a nation, we should be proud of what we have accomplished over the last twenty years since VAWA was passed. But as Arkansans, we can and must do more here at home.

I hope you'll stand with me and keep fighting to stop domestic violence.

Sincerely,
Mike Ross

Dr. Charles Denson Avery, M.D.

My sister was born in North Little Rock, Arkansas right after they got married.  My brother born Fort Knox, Kentucky.

I was born January 14, 1962 at the Cora Donnell Hospital.

Kid on the Porch.

Prescott Junior High School
 Front Row:  Fourth from the Left

First United Methodist Church of Prescott, Arkansas
Front Row:  Far Right

Most of this stuff I learned about my father just recently.  My sister being seven years older than me had all these articles in her scrape book...for her school projects I guess.  My brother and sister were army brats. I was born and raised same town as my father. Didn't even know my father ever attended church until my mother came across this last group photo of my dad taken beside the Methodist Church she thought I would like to add to my collection of photos just now starting all these years later after my father had already died.   I was practically raised by this same church right up until graduating Prescott High School.

Apparently same as my father.

William Blake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William Blake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: William Blake (28 November 1757 – 12 August 1827) was an English painter, poet and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. His prophetic poetry has been said to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language".[2] His visual artistry led one contemporary art critic to proclaim him "far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced".[3] In 2002, Blake was placed at number 38 in the BBC's poll of the 100 Greatest Britons.[4] Although he lived in London his entire life (except for three years spent in Felpham),[5] he produced a diverse and symbolically rich oeuvre, which embraced the imagination as "the body of God"[6] or "human existence itself".[7]

Although Blake was considered mad by contemporaries for his idiosyncratic views, he is held in high regard by later critics for his expressiveness and creativity, and for the philosophical and mystical undercurrents within his work. His paintings and poetry have been characterised as part of the Romantic movement and "Pre-Romantic",[8] for its large appearance in the 18th century. Reverent of the Bible but hostile to the Church of England (indeed, to all forms of organised religion), Blake was influenced by the ideals and ambitions of the French and American Revolutions.[9] Though later he rejected many of these political beliefs, he maintained an amiable relationship with the political activist Thomas Paine; he was also influenced by thinkers such as Emanuel Swedenborg.[10] Despite these known influences, the singularity of Blake's work makes him difficult to classify. The 19th-century scholar William Rossetti characterised him as a "glorious luminary",[11] and "a man not forestalled by predecessors, nor to be classed with contemporaries, nor to be replaced by known or readily surmisable successors".12]

William Blake was born on 28 November 1757 at 28 Broad Street (now Broadwick St.) in Soho, London. He was the third of seven children,[14][15] two of whom died in infancy. Blake's father, James, was a hosier.[15] He attended school only long enough to learn reading and writing, leaving at the age of ten, and was otherwise educated at home by his mother Catherine Wright Armitage Blake.[16] Even though the Blakes were English Dissenters,[17] William was baptised on 11 December at St James's Church, Piccadilly, London.[18] The Bible was an early and profound influence on Blake, and remained a source of inspiration throughout his life.

Although Blake's attacks on conventional religion were shocking in his own day, his rejection of religiosity was not a rejection of religion per se. His view of orthodoxy is evident in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, a series of texts written in imitation of Biblical prophecy. Therein, Blake lists several Proverbs of Hell, among which are the following:

  • Prisons are built with stones of Law, Brothels with bricks of Religion.
  • As the catterpiller [sic] chooses the fairest leaves to lay her eggs on, so the priest lays his curse on the fairest joys. (8.21, 9.55, E36)
In The Everlasting Gospel, Blake does not present Jesus as a philosopher or traditional messianic figure, but as a supremely creative being, above dogma, logic and even morality:

If he had been Antichrist Creeping Jesus,
He'd have done anything to please us:
Gone sneaking into Synagogues
And not us'd the Elders & Priests like Dogs,
But humble as a Lamb or Ass,
Obey'd himself to Caiaphas.
God wants not Man to Humble himself (55–61, E519-20)

Jesus, for Blake, symbolises the vital relationship and unity between divinity and humanity: "All had originally one language, and one religion: this was the religion of Jesus, the everlasting Gospel. Antiquity preaches the Gospel of Jesus." (Descriptive Catalogue, Plate 39, E543)

Blake designed his own mythology, which appears largely in his prophetic books. Within these he describes a number of characters, including "Urizen", "Enitharmon", "Bromion" and "Luvah". His mythology seems to have a basis in the Bible as well as Greek and Norse mythology,[89][90] and it accompanies his ideas about the everlasting Gospel.

One of Blake's strongest objections to orthodox Christianity is that he felt it encouraged the suppression of natural desires and discouraged earthly joy. In A Vision of the Last Judgment, Blake says that:

Men are admitted into Heaven not because they have curbed and governd their Passions or have No Passions but because they have Cultivated their Understandings. The Treasures of Heaven are not Negations of Passion but Realities of Intellect from which All the Passions Emanate Uncurbed in their Eternal Glory. (E564)
One may also note his words concerning religion in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell:

All Bibles or sacred codes have been the causes of the following Errors.
1. That Man has two real existing principles Viz: a Body & a Soul.
2. That Energy, called Evil, is alone from the Body, & that Reason, called Good, is alone from the Soul.
3. That God will torment Man in Eternity for following his Energies.
But the following Contraries to these are True
1. Man has no Body distinct from his Soul for that calld Body is a portion of Soul discernd by the five Senses, the chief inlets of Soul in this age.
2. Energy is the only life and is from the Body and Reason is the bound or outward circumference of Energy.
3. Energy is Eternal Delight. (Plate 4, E34)
Blake does not subscribe to the notion of a body distinct from the soul that must submit to the rule of the soul, but sees the body as an extension of the soul, derived from the 'discernment' of the senses. Thus, the emphasis orthodoxy places upon the denial of bodily urges is a dualistic error born of misapprehension of the relationship between body and soul. Elsewhere, he describes Satan as the 'state of error', and as beyond salvation.

Blake opposed the sophistry of theological thought that excuses pain, admits evil and apologises for injustice. He abhorred self-denial,[92] which he associated with religious repression and particularly sexual repression:[93] "Prudence is a rich ugly old maid courted by Incapacity. / He who desires but acts not, breeds pestilence." (7.4–5, E35) He saw the concept of 'sin' as a trap to bind men's desires (the briars of Garden of Love), and believed that restraint in obedience to a moral code imposed from the outside was against the spirit of life:
Abstinence sows sand all over
The ruddy limbs & flaming hair
But Desire Gratified
Plants fruits & beauty there. (E474)
He did not hold with the doctrine of God as Lord, an entity separate from and superior to mankind;[94] this is shown clearly in his words about Jesus Christ: "He is the only God ... and so am I, and so are you." A telling phrase in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell is "men forgot that All deities reside in the human breast". This is very much in line with his belief in liberty and social equality in society and between the sexes.

Many such as June Singer have argued that Blake's thoughts on human nature greatly anticipate and parallel the thinking of the psychoanalyst Carl Jung, although Jung dismissed Blake's works as "an artistic production rather than an authentic representation of unconscious processes."[109] Similarly, although less popularly, Diana Hume George claimed that Blake can be seen as a precursor to the ideas of Sigmund Freud.[110]

Mike Ross
james,
If a candidate isn't honest before he's elected, how can you trust him to tell the truth afterward?
Congressman Asa Hutchinson's Washington and Wall Street allies are running a smear TV ad attacking my wife and me with accusations found to be "false and defamatory" by Fa‌ctCheck‌.‌org, a non-partisan fact-checking organization.
Tell Congressman Hutchinson to demand his Washington allies pull their slanderous ad and apologize. Click here to sign the petition.
The honest thing for Congressman Hutchinson to do would be to condemn the ad and ask his friends at the Republican Governors Association (RGA) to pull it from the airwaves -- but instead he is staying silent. He's even campaigned side-by-side with RGA Chairman and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie as they launched their smear campaign here in Arkansas.
Here's the truth: In 2007, my wife and I sold our family-owned small business -- which we spent years working hard to build -- for a fair price. Two years later, reports accused me of getting "a sweetheart deal" on the sale based on a bogus appraisal -- a smear that was thoroughly discredited almost immediately by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and the House Ethics Committee.
Yet, Congressman Hutchinson's friends are trotting out the same old falsehoods and making the outrageous suggestion that my integrity is "for sale" -- while Congressman Hutchinson says nothing.
This entire ad is nothing more than a desperate attempt by Congressman Hutchinson to hide the fact he cheated on his taxes, got caught, and is now behind in the polls. He thinks this new false attack ad will help him regain the lead, and we need to prove him wrong. We need to show him that Arkansas voters want this race to be about real issues, not dishonest attacks.
In the wake of FactCh‌eck‌.‌org's new independent analysis, Congressman Hutchinson should join me in asking his Washington friends to immediately pull their slanderous ad from the airwaves and apologize.
Will you help me call on Congressman Hutchinson to condemn his friends' slanderous ad? Click here to sign the petition now.
Arkansas voters deserve better than a campaign based on smears and falsehoods. Thanks for standing with me to demand Congressman Hutchinson do the honest thing and condemn these desperate attacks.
Sincerely,
Mike Ross

I've posted my Social Security Statement mainly to highlight just how little I made as a veterinarian.

I didn't come to the conclusion I was gay until my second year in veterinary school.

Having to relearn myself, starting all over from scratch,  held me back from being competitive in the work place.

I'm so happy for Mike that he found a business partner he could marry so early in his life.

And I can't help but notice how domestic violence against women and children is high on his list of issues; yet he votes against the Matthew Shepard Law.

What does he expect of me...
marry a woman I don't love and have children with her just to be able having a fair chance competing with the likes of him.

I see him no different than Cain, having thrown me under a yellow school bus in order to further his political ambitions.

And with ordained ministers guaranteed placement within the Methodist Church,  I really would like the public to see a frank comparison between me as James E. Avery, DVM, son of a small town medical doctor having a wife who was a nurse until becoming a full time housewife; Mike Avery Ross, politician son of educators;  and George Robert Gary, Jr. MDIV, author of JESUS UNPLUGGED, son of George Robert Gary, Sr. MDiv, ThD and his wife a retired secretary.

The title for this project I have in mind is:

THE FATHERS, THE SONS, AND THEIR HOLY GHOST:  THE STORY OF THREE METHODIST SONS

The only problem, out of the three of us,  I'm the only one with nothing to lose telling the whole truth.

On Another's Sorrow: The School Boy

On Another's Sorrow:

by

William Blake

Can I see another's woe,
And not be in sorrow too!
Can I see another's grief,
And not seek for kind relief!

     Can I see a falling tear,
And not feel my sorrow's share?
Can a father see his child
'Weep, nor be with sorrow fill'd!

     Can a mother sit and hear
An infant groan, an infant fear?
No, no! never can it be!
Never, never can it be!

    And can he who smiles on all
Hear the wren with sorrows small,
Hear the small bird's grief & care,
Hear the woes that infants bear,

     And not sit beside the nest,
Pouring pity in their breast;
And not sit the cradle near,
Weeping tear on infant's tear;

     And not sit both night & day,
Wiping all our tears away?
O! no, never can it be!
Never, never can it be!

     He doth give his joy to all;
He becomes an infant small;
He becomes a man of woe;
He doth feel the sorrow too.

     Think not thou canst sigh a sigh,
And thy maker is not by;
Think not thou canst weep a tear,
And thy maker is not near.

     O! he gives to us his joy
That our grief he may destroy;
Till our grief is fled & gone
He doth sit by us and moan.

The School Boy

by

William Blake

I love to rise in a summer morn
When the birds sing on every tree;
The distant huntsman winds his horn,
And the sky-lark sings with me.
O! what sweet company.

     But to go to school in a summer morn,
O! it drives all joy away;
Under a cruel eye outworn,
The little ones spend the day
In sighing and dismay.

     Ah! then at times I drooping sit,
And spend many an anxious hour,
Nor in my book can I take delight,
Nor sit in learning's bower,
Worn thro' with the dreary shower.

     How can the bird that is born for joy
Sit in a cage and sing:'
Hear can a child, when fears annoy,
But droop his tender wing,
And forget his youthful spring?

     O! father & mother, if buds are nip'd
And blossoms blown away,
And if the tender plants are strip'd
Of their joy in the springing day,
By sorrow and care's dismay,

     How shall the summer arise in joy,
Or the summer fruits appearr
Or how shall we gather what griefs destroy,
Or bless the mellowing year,
When the blasts of winter appear?

The Shepherd

by

William Blake

How sweet is the Shepherd's sweet lot!
From the morn to the evening he strays;
He shall follows his sheep all the day,
And his tongue shall be filled with praise.

     For he hears the lamb's innocent call,
And he hears the ewe's tender reply;
He is watchful while they are in peace,
For they know when their Shepherd is nigh.

The Lamb

by

William Blake

Little Lamb, who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee?
Gave thee life & bid thee feed,
By the stream & o'er the mead;
Gave thee clothing of delight,
Softest clothing, wooly, bright;
Gave thee such a tender voice,
Making all the vales rejoice?
Little Lamb, who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee?

     Little Lamb, I'll tell thee,
Little Lamb, I'll tell thee:
He is called by thy name,
For he calls himself a Lamb.
He is meek & he is mild;
He became a little child.
I a child & thou a lamb.
We are called by his name.
Little Lamb, God bless thee!
Little Lamb, God bless thee!

Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, also known as the Matthew Shepard Act, is an American Act of Congress, passed on October 22, 2009,[1] and signed into law by President Barack Obama on October 28, 2009,[2] as a rider to the National Defense Authorization Act for 2010 (H.R. 2647). Conceived as a response to the murders of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., the measure expands the 1969 United States federal hate-crime law to include crimes motivated by a victim's actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.[3]

The bill also:

Removes the prerequisite that the victim be engaging in a federally protected activity, like voting or going to school;

Gives federal authorities greater ability to engage in hate crimes investigations that local authorities choose not to pursue;

Provides $5 million per year in funding for fiscal years 2010 through 2012 to help state and local agencies pay for investigating and prosecuting hate crimes;

Requires the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to track statistics on hate crimes based on gender and gender identity (statistics for the other groups were already tracked).[4][5]

The Act is the first federal law to extend legal protections to transgender people.[6]

The Act is named after Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr.[7] Shepard was a student who was tortured and murdered in 1998 near Laramie, Wyoming. The attack was widely reported due to his being gay, and the trial employed a gay panic defense.[7][8] Byrd was an African American man who was tied to a truck by two white supremacists, dragged behind it, and decapitated in Jasper, Texas, in 1998.[7] Shepard's murderers were given life sentences—in large part because his parents sought mercy for his killers. Two of Byrd's murderers were sentenced to death, while the third was sentenced to life in prison. All the convictions were obtained without the assistance of hate crimes laws, since none was applicable at the time.

Supporters of an expansion of hate crime laws argued that hate crimes are worse than regular crimes without a prejudiced motivation from a psychological perspective. The time it takes to mentally recover from a hate crime is almost twice as long as it is for a regular crime and LGBT people often feel as if they are being punished for their sexuality, which leads to higher incidence of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.[12] They also cited the response to Shepard's murder by many LGBT people, especially youth, who reported going back into the closet, fearing for their safety, experiencing a strong sense of self-loathing, and upset that the same thing could happen to them because of their sexual orientation.[12]

LGBT issues

In April 2009, Mike Ross voted against the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

Second Amendment | Mike Ross

Second Amendment | Mike Ross: Arkansas has a rich heritage and tradition of outdoor activities that are important to our way of life, as they have been to my family and me for five generations.

As an avid hunter and outdoorsman, I believe responsible gun ownership has long been part of these important Arkansas traditions that must be preserved. As a pro-gun Arkansan and gun owner who has a concealed carry permit, I have always fought for our Second Amendment rights and the rights of law-abiding gun owners across this state. And, as governor, I will continue to fight to defend these very important rights.

Choctaw - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Choctaw - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: The Choctaw (alternatively spelled Chahta, Chactas, Tchakta, Chocktaw, and Chactaw) are Native American people originally from the Southeastern United States (modern-day Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana). The Choctaw language belongs to the Muskogean linguistic group. The Choctaw are descendants of the peoples of the Hopewell and Mississippian cultures, who lived throughout the east of the Mississippi River valley and its tributaries.

The Choctaw coalesced as a people in the 17th century, and developed three distinct political and geographical divisions: eastern, western and southern, which sometimes created differing alliances with nearby European powers. These included the French, based on the Gulf Coast and in Louisiana, the English of the Southeast, and the Spanish of Florida and Louisiana during the colonial era. During the American Revolution, most Choctaw supported the Thirteen Colonies' bid for independence from the British Crown. They never went to war against the United States prior to Indian Removal.

In the 19th century, the Choctaw became known as one of the "Five Civilized Tribes" because they adopted numerous practices of their United States neighbors. The Choctaw and the United States (US) agreed to nine treaties and, by the last three, the US gained vast land cessions and deracinated most Choctaw west of the Mississippi River to Indian Territory. They were the first Native Americans forced under the Indian Removal Act. The Choctaw were exiled because the U.S. wanted to expand territory available for settlement by European Americans,[5] to save the tribe from extinction,[6] and to acquire their natural resources.[7] The Choctaw negotiated the largest area and most desirable lands in Indian Territory.

George Washington (first U.S. President) and Henry Knox (first U.S. Secretary of War) proposed the cultural transformation of Native Americans.[29] Washington believed that Native Americans were equals but that their society was inferior to that of the European Americans. He formulated a policy to encourage the "civilizing" process, and Thomas Jefferson continued it.[30] The historian Robert Remini wrote, "[T]hey presumed that once the Indians adopted the practice of private property, built homes, farmed, educated their children, and embraced Christianity, these Native Americans would win acceptance from white Americans."[31]

Washington's six-point plan included impartial justice toward Indians; regulated buying of Indian lands; promotion of commerce; promotion of experiments to civilize or improve Indian society; presidential authority to give presents; and punishing those who violated Indian rights.[32

After the Revolutionary War, the Choctaw were reluctant to ally themselves with countries hostile to the United States. John R. Swanton wrote, "the Choctaw were never at war with the Americans. A few were induced by Tecumseh (a Shawnee leader who sought support from various Native American tribes) to ally themselves with the hostile Creeks [in the early 19th century], but the Nation as a whole was kept out of anti-American alliances by the influence of Apushmataha, greatest of all Choctaw chiefs."[42]

The local, state, tribal, and federal agencies are provided with two modes to add, modify, supplement, or cancel NICS Index entries.
The first mode is an electronic connection between the NICS and the contributing agency using the NCIC-Front End. An agency may use this interface to electronically submit, modify, supplement, cancel, or display a denied person’s disqualifying information in the NICS Index. The second mode is batch data transfer on CD, diskette, or by secure e-mail. The NICS Index entries, modifications, supplements, and cancellations are to be processed by the contributing agency since the contributing agency is responsible for the accuracy and validity of the NICS Index information. It is imperative to update the NICS Index as necessary to minimize erroneous denials. The contributing agency is responsible for responding to appeals, assessments, and audits of the submitted records.
In addition to local, state, tribal, and federal agencies voluntarily contributing information to the NICS Index, the NICS Section receives telephone calls from mental health institutions, psychiatrists, police departments, and family members requesting placement of individuals into the NICS Index. Frequently, these are emergency situations and require immediate attention. Any documentation justifying a valid entry into the NICS Index must be available to the originating agencies.

Biden says Administration Doesn't Have Time to Prosecute People Who Lie on Background Checks

"We think it is problematic when the administration takes lightly the prosecutions under existing gun laws and yet does not seem to have a problem promoting a whole host of other gun laws," said Baker.   "If we are not going to enforce the laws that are on the books, it not only engenders disrespect for the law but it makes law-abiding gun owners wonder why we are going through this exercise we are going through now."

Commenting on the administration's inability to prosecute persons who lie to obtain a firearm, NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox said,  "They don't have time to pursue people who are dangerous, who aren't supposed to get guns, and the message they have sent is literally 'Good luck, go get them elsewhere.'  You can talk all you want," Cox continued, "but until there is a will to follow through, then it is literally just going to paper over the problem and guarantee that bad people continue to have access to firearms and good people will be blamed for it."
